Essay Samples - Which Type Should You Choose?Most teachers might be familiar with either Ad Hominem or the Argumentative Essay. Unfortunately, they rarely get to choose which one to include in their class; therefore, it's important that the teacher pick the right one for the given essay sample. If they did, this would be easier.Both 'Ad Hominem'Theory in Use' can be used in either essay samples for a specific topic. When looking at an essay sample, you can tell which one is an 'Argumentative Essay' by the last paragraph, as the writing style is very similar.The reason it is called an 'Argumentative Essay' is because the writer is stating his or her opinion about a certain topic without actually offering a particular solution to the problem. In fact, if the author is using this essay as a form of critique, the 'Argumentative Essay' is not really an essay at all. Because of its focus on opinions, it's considered an argument rather than a written work.'Theory in Use' is not an 'Argument ative Essay.' It is a formal essay, but it can't be used to show why one theory is better than another. Because the writer is not giving any specifics, the essay cannot actually have an answer or conclusion.The purpose of the 'Theory in Use' essay is to give a description of how someone feels about a particular topic or opinion. The essay serves as a study guide for future exams that need to go over the concepts from the essay. Students learn by being shown how to solve problems.In terms of Essay samples, 'Theory in Use' is considered more of a 'Wording Essay,' as the writer has no specific topic to write about. Although the topic is related to the subject matter of the essay, it isn't the focus of the essay sample.The 'Argumentative Essay' is usually used for college-level exams and is considered by many to be a form of 'out of classroom' writing. The essay is seen as a way to inject the writer's own opinions into the essays and not offer an actual solution.Even though the two type s of essays are similar, they are not the same. If you're having difficulty choosing one over the other, remember that the purpose of any essay is to provide an answer or conclusion to a question. It is just a matter of finding the perfect type of essay to fit the assignment.
